Aiming for the Middle
How Small Daily Choices Can Lead to Big Life Changes—Especially in Midlife
We live in a world of extremes. One minute we're eating fast food in the car, the next we're vowing to start a 30-day cleanse, give up carbs, join a gym, and meditate twice a day. Sound familiar? Some people joke that this represents a balanced life, but the energy and confidence that come from daily healthier choices is priceless.
If you’re in midlife and tired of swinging from “all in” to “all out,” you’re not alone—and you don’t need to be perfect to feel better.
There's a powerful and sustainable space in between the extremes. Let’s call it the middle—a place where you consistently move your body a little more, eat a little better, and feel a whole lot stronger and more in charge. No fads. No guilt. No extremes: Just progress.
Why Aim for the Middle?
Because perfection is exhausting—and unrealistic.
And doing nothing? That doesn’t work either— especially for your long-term health and disease risks.
The middle is where consistency lives. It’s where your energy improves, your clothes fit better, your blood pressure is lower, and you stop feeling like you’re failing.
Midlife is the perfect time to stop chasing extremes and start building a better baseline to carry you well into your ‘golden’ years.
Practical Ways to “Aim for the Middle”
Here are small, doable shifts that make a big difference over time:
🥗 Upgrade & Substitute (Don’t Overhaul)
Instead of trying to cut all your favorite foods (thinks comfort foods and simple carbs), try adding more nutrient dense foods for more energy and weight loss
Add one veggie to each meal.
Swap one soda or sweet tea a day for water, sparkling flavored water or herbal tea.
Choose whole grains such as oats, quinoa, or brown rice over white bread and white flour pasta at least some of the time.
🏃♀️ Move a Little More, Most Days
You don’t have to train like an athlete. Just move!
10-minute walk after dinner
Stretch while watching TV
Dance while cleaning
Use stairs instead of the elevator
A little movement every day adds up to a healthier heart, steadier mood, and muscles that don’t atrophy with disuse. Get my tip sheet for building a lasting routine of movement.
🧠 Choose Mindset Over Willpower
Forget “I’ve got to lose weight.” Instead, try:
“I’m learning how to take better care of myself.”
“I deserve to feel good.”
“Progress over perfection.”
Midlife isn’t the beginning of the end. It’s the beginning of knowing and doing better. Instead of allowing your childhood habits and tastebuds to direct your health, you can ‘adult’ them to a more rational setting. Get my free template for stepping out of self-sabotage mode. 🕓 Keep It Simple
Change needn’t be complicated:
Prep a few grab-and-go snacks such as apples, almonds, or hummus and veggies.
Go to bed 30 minutes earlier—-without your phone.
Be intentional with your daily hydration habits to ensure you’re on-track.
Do one thing every day that makes you feel proud.

What ‘the Middle’ Looks Like
It’s eating home-cooked meals most days.
It’s taking a walk, even if it’s short, because it’s better than nothing.
It’s choosing self-respect over self-criticism.
It’s knowing your health matters—and so do you.
The cumulative result: more vibrant health as you age. No deprivation or extremes needed.
Final Word
You don’t need a perfect diet.
You don’t need a punishing workout plan.
You can build better daily habits and a powerful mindset— one doable step at a time.
So if you’ve been stuck in a “do little or nothing” rut, don’t aim for perfection—aim for the middle. That’s where the magic happens.
