Helpful tooL? GLP-1POV
If you've been paying attention to the health and wellness conversations lately, you can't miss the buzz around GLP-1 medications.
And I've had a lot of people ask me for my professional opinion.
So let me start by saying something that might surprise you:
I'm not against GLP-1 medications. Even though my approach is grounded in ‘no extremes, diets or gimmicks.’
In fact, I believe these medications can be a valuable health tool—especially for those who have struggled for years to gain traction with their weight loss efforts.
But I also believe we need to have an honest conversation about what these medications can—and cannot—do.
Sometimes people need another tool in the toolbox
For some people, weight management is incredibly difficult.
It's not simply a matter of "eat less and exercise more." Biology, appetite regulation, medications, health conditions, genetics, environment and years of dieting can all play a role.
Some people have tried again and again and simply can't seem to get traction.
For those individuals, a GLP-1 medication may be an appropriate medical tool.
And I don't believe anyone should be judged for making that choice
If someone is working with their physician and using a medication appropriately, I support that decision.
But here's where I hope people will be cautious
GLP-1s are powerful medications. They aren't something I would encourage anyone to purchase from a random website, take without medical oversight or treat as just another trendy wellness product.
If you are considering a GLP-1, talk with your doctor.
Get clear about the potential benefits, side effects, interactions and risks. Make sure you're getting the medication from a reputable source. (The underground market for medications like this, botox etc. are real.) And be sure to have medical supervision if using.
Your health is too important to gamble with an unregulated product or an online shortcut.
Weight loss doesn’t automatically equal a health gain
This is one of my biggest concerns when we talk about weight loss—whether medication is involved or not.
What are you actually losing?
The number on a scale doesn't tell us whether the weight lost is primarily body fat, muscle or other lean tissue.
And as we GE preserving muscle becomes increasingly important.
For women 50+, strength isn't just about looking toned.
Muscle supports:
Strength and independence
Mobility and balance
Everyday function
Metabolic health
Healthy aging
Quality of life
That's why I don't want women to focus solely on getting the scale moving.
I want them to focus on becoming stronger, healthier and more capable.
If you're using a GLP-1, nutrition and resistance training matter greatly.
What happens when you stop?
Another question worth asking:
Is it a short-term solution or part of a long-term plan?
For many people, GLP-1 medications aren't simply something they take for a few months and then walk away from. Weight regain after discontinuing medication often occurs, and some people may need ongoing treatment to maintain the benefits.
So it’s important to think beyond the initial weight loss.
And that's where habits become incredibly important.
Don't outsource your health to a medication
A medication can help regulate appetite.
It can't build your habits for you.
It can't decide what you eat when you're stressed.
It can't make you go to bed instead of scrolling for another hour.
It can't teach you how to navigate a restaurant, a vacation or a holiday meal.
It can't build your confidence in the kitchen.
It can't strengthen your muscles.
And it can't change the way you think about food, movement or your own ability to care for yourself.
That's why I believe building a solid foundation —with or without medication— is critical. (Be inspired by real-life WhyPowered success stories HERE.)
Nourish your body
Choose mostly whole, nourishing foods. Eat plenty of plants. Include adequate protein. Reduce foods that don't serve your health well. (Grab some simple and free nutrition guidance here on my website.)
Move your body
Walk. Strength train. Work on balance. Get your heart rate up. Find forms of movement you enjoy enough to keep doing. (More simple guidance about movement here on my website.)
Prioritize recovery
Sleep matters. So does stress management. Your body needs recovery just as much as it needs activity.
Develop a solid mindset for health
These are the habits that will support health for the long haul.
And for those who don't want a GLP
Rest assured: You have other options.
Returning to your happy weight is possible without these medications.
I've partnered with hundreds of clients who’ve made significant health changes without deprivation, extreme diets or quick fixes.
Not because they found the "perfect" diet.
Because they learned how to make small changes consistently—and those shifts became solid lifestyle habits.
That's the approach I believe in.
No shame.
No judgment.
No extremes.
No starting over every Monday.
Just learning how to take better care of yourself in ways that actually fit your life.
Bottom line
GLP-1 medications can be a valuable tool for some people.
If you choose to use one, do it responsibly and under the care of a qualified medical professional.
And don't lose sight of the habits that support your health regardless of whether you take medication. (I make a great addition to a care team in this way!)
I support people who choose GLP-1s.
And I also know that it’s possible to improve your health and achieve lasting weight loss without them.
Because ultimately, weight is only one piece of the health picture.
My goal isn't simply to help people return to their happy weight.
It's to help women 50+ feel strong, confident, capable and in charge of their health again. (Real life WhyPowered Success Story Inspiration HERE.)
The medication may help create the traction.
Your habits help create the transformation.
And that is why I will always believe that mindset and sustainable habits are the foundation of good health and vitality.
