Stay in the Pool: The Secret to Lasting Wellness Success

One of my favorite analogies for health and wellness is swimming.

When you're in a swimming pool, there are moments when you're making strong, steady progress across. Your strokes feel powerful. You know exactly where you're headed.

But there are also times when you get tired.

You may need to slow down.
You may need to tread water.
You may even need to roll onto your back and float for a while.

None of those choices mean you've failed.

The only way to invite failure is to climb out of the pool.

Life isn't lived under perfect conditions. There are seasons of caregiving, demanding jobs, illness, grief, vacations, holidays, family obligations, and unexpected challenges. During those times, your "best" may look very different.

Instead of exercising five days a week, maybe you walk twice.

Instead of preparing every meal from scratch, you rely on healthy-ish shortcuts.

Instead of losing weight, your goal becomes maintaining.

That's not giving up.

That's treading water.

And treading water is a skill.

It keeps you safe.
It keeps you in the game.
It allows you to recover so you can start swimming again when you're able.

Too many people see wellness thru an all or nothing lens.

"I missed my workouts this week."
"I ate dessert."
"I gained three pounds."
"I'll start over Monday."

But healthy people don't constantly start over.

They simply adjust their approach to fit their real life circumstance.

They know there will be seasons of sprinting and seasons of surviving. They don't let temporary slowdowns become permanent quitting points.

In my coaching practice, I often encourage women to think in terms of a performance improvement system of Good, Better, Best. (Check out my latest 8 minute video about this proven performance improvement framework.)

Some days are “Best” days.

Some days are "Better" days.

Some days "Good" is the best you’re able to do, and that’s enough.

What matters most isn't the speed of your progress—it's your consistency over months and years.

Because every day you stay in the pool, you're reinforcing the identity of someone who takes care of themself.

Wellness isn't earned by being perfect.

It's built by repeatedly coming back to yourself.

So if life feels overwhelming right now …

Float if you need to.

Tread water if you must.

Rest without guilt.

Then, when you're able, take your next stroke.

But be sure to stay in the pool.

Because the people who experience lasting transformation aren't the ones who never struggle.

They're the ones who never stop showing up and investing in their wellness.

Your future health isn't determined by today's pace. It's determined by your willingness to stay in the pool.
