As we embrace spring—a new season of renewal and hope— it’s a great time to plant some new seeds and push back on restrictive thinking that might pop up —especially around our food choices.

With intention, we can bring our daily habits into the light of spring to feel more in charge and to thrive.

I’m sharing 7 practical ways to step out ‘starting over’ mode (and over and over) and release one of the most common self sabotaging habit pattern that can hold us back from the outcomes we most want.

That most common saboteur? It’s all-or-nothing thinking patterns.

It’s one of the biggest barriers to sustainable wellness habits that I see and help women rewire—especially for those who have spent years in diet culture.

Step 1. Name the Pattern

Many people don’t realize they’re stuck in all-or-nothing thinking until it’s brought into the light.
All-or-nothing thinking says you’re either doing it perfectly or you’ve failed.

But wellness isn’t a light switch—it’s a “dimmer.” We can dial it up or dim it—-but ideally, we want to keep it always glowing.

Thought pattern examples:

  • “I don’t have enough time for a full workout, so I guess I’ll try some other day”

  • “I ate dessert, so today is a cheat day”

  • “I can’t follow a diet plan perfectly, so why even try?”

In my coaching partnerships, I help clients recognize their patterns which the first step to change and getting results.

Step 2. Emphasize the Power of “Something”

Progress happens in gray areas.

Something is always better than nothing. A 10-minute walk still counts. A single better choice still counts.

Examples:

  • Adding a vegetable instead of overhauling an entire meal

  • Pausing and checking in with yourself before emotional eating

Small actions keep momentum alive.

Step 3. Shift From Perfection to Practice

Wellness habits are skills that get stronger with repetition.
Healthy habits aren’t about perfection—they’re about practice.

  • Instead of “Did I do it perfectly?”

  • Ask “Did I practice the habit today?”

Step 4. Normalize Imperfect Days

Setbacks are not failures—they’re part of the process.

If one off-track moment erased progress, no one would ever succeed at anything.

Building consistency over time matters more than any single day.

Step 5. Use the “Next Best Choice” Mindset

I help clients learn to recover quickly instead of abandoning themselves when they get off-track. They learn how to stay on the road, course correct and find detours that move them forward.

No waiting for Monday, next month, or a new year. Self care is a daily practice.

Step 6. Celebrate Your Wins---a way to plant and cultivate new seeds

Most progress happens in incremental improvements.
Doing  something 70% of the time consistently beats doing it 100% for a just a week.

Notice and celebrate small wins to rewire and reinforce a new, more supportive behavior:

  •  Cooking more meals at home  YAY!

  • Celebrating drinking more water YIPEE!

  • Not scrolling before sleep time HOORAY!

Remember: Even partial success moves you forward.

Step 7. Replace the Inner Critic With Curiosity and Kindness

Harsh self-talk fuels all-or-nothing cycles.

Instead of judging yourself, I encourage you to get curious.

Ask:

  • What triggered that choice?

  • What might help me next time to choose differently?

Curiosity creates learning instead of shame.

Wellness isn’t built on perfect days. It’s built on imperfect days where you keep showing up anyway. Small consistent steps make for big results over time.
