Growing Happiness
Self-Love & Self-Care: An Unshakable Foundation of Happiness
In a culture that glorifies busyness, productivity, and self-sacrifice—especially for women—self-love and self-care are often misunderstood as indulgent luxuries.
They are not.
They are the foundation of emotional resilience, physical wellbeing, and lasting happiness.
And for women in midlife and beyond, this truth becomes even more powerful.
Self-Love, (re-) Defined
Self-love is not bubble baths and spa days (though those can be lovely).
Self-love is:
Speaking to yourself with compassion instead of criticism
Setting boundaries instead of overextending
Nourishing your body instead of punishing it
Forgiving yourself instead of replaying mistakes
It’s the shift from “What’s wrong with me?”
to
“What do I need?”
&
“How might I support myself better?”
Research consistently shows that people with higher levels of self-compassion experience lower anxiety, lower depression, and greater life satisfaction. Dr. Kristin Neff’s work on self-compassion has demonstrated that treating ourselves kindly actually increases motivation and resilience—not complacency.
When we feel safe inside ourselves, we make more sound decisions.
Why Self-Care Is Not Selfish
Self-care is the behavior that supports self-love.
It’s how love turns into action.
It includes:
Moving your body in ways that feel supportive
Choosing foods that energize you
Prioritizing sleep
Saying “no thanks” when your belly is full
Asking for support
Studies show that consistent self-care practices reduce stress hormones such as cortisol and improve cardiovascular health. Chronic stress, on the other hand, is directly linked to weight gain, inflammation, heart disease, and mood disorders.
When you neglect yourself, your body eventually demands attention. (It always is in need of attention—-but too often when it’s whispering to us we don’t listen or are so busy or disconnected, we don’t hear it.
When you care for yourself proactively, you build a life that feels steady and sustainable.
The Connection Between Self-Love, Weigh, and Wellness
This is especially important in the health and weight loss space. (Click here to reference my healthy daily minimums and maximums for staying in good balance.)
Many women were taught to change their bodies from a place of criticism and ‘not good enough-ness’:
“I’ll be happy when …”
“I’ll feel confident when …”
“I’ll love myself once …”
But research in behavioral psychology shows that shame rarely creates sustainable change. In fact, self-criticism increases stress eating, emotional reactivity, and all-or-nothing thinking.
Lasting health improvement grows from self-respect, not resentment.
When you practice self-love:
You stop quitting after an “imperfect” day.
You stop punishing yourself with extreme restrictions.
You choose consistency over drama.
You view wellness habits as investments—not punishments.
Self-care becomes a way to support your future self, not fix your current self.
Happiness Is Built, Not Found
Happiness is not a number on the scale.
It’s not a size.
It’s not a future milestone.
Happiness is built daily through:
Alignment with your values
Emotional regulation
Physical vitality
Supportive relationships
A sense of self-trust
Self-love builds self-trust.
Self-care builds physical and emotional stability.
Together, they create happiness that doesn’t collapse when life gets hard.
A Powerful Midlife Shift
For women 50+, this season can be transformative.
Instead of chasing youth, you can cultivate wisdom.
Instead of punishing your body, you can befriend it.
Instead of abandoning yourself for everyone else, you can finally come home to yourself.
That is not selfish; It’s strength.
A Simple Practice to Begin
If you want to begin strengthening your foundation of self-love and self-care, start here:
Every morning, ask:
“What would someone who deeply cares about herself choose today?”
Then take one small action in that direction.
Small steps.
Daily consistency.
Gentle self-respect.
Happiness doesn’t arrive; It grows.
And it grows fastest in soil that is nourished by love.
