95% more likely
Studies show that we humans are as much as 95% more likely to reach our goals with accountability and support.
We’ve all heard the saying: “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.” When it comes to health and sustainable weight loss, that wisdom isn’t just poetic — it’s scientifically supported.
So many of us get recommitted to our health journeys feeling focused and strong in January … only to lose steam by mid-February. Whether it’s late evenings, busy weekends, stressful days, or plateaus in our progress, motivation fluctuates. And that’s where support and accountability step in — not as judgmental overseers, but as dependable guides who help us show up for ourselves again and again.
The Power of Being Accountable
Research has shown time and again that accountability can dramatically improve your chances of achieving your goals:
🔹 A widely cited study found that when people commit to a goal with someone else, their odds of achieving it jump from roughly 25% to 65% — and when that commitment includes scheduled accountability check-ins, success rates soar to 95%.
That’s not luck — that’s the power of connection plus commitment.
I personally experienced this power decades ago—- when I was much younger and less wise. I was addicted to nicotine (yes, I smoked for years) and had tried many times and ways to stop this destructive habit. It wasn’t until I found a group to support me and be accountable to that I was finally able to become a former smoker. That was nearly half my life ago!
Support + Accountability = Better Weight Loss Outcomes
It’s one thing to want to lose weight — it’s anoter thing to stay on track with it. Here’s how supportive connections help:
⭐ Stronger weight loss in community settings: People actively engaged in group weight-management programs tend to lose more weight than those who don’t connect with others. For example, participants who were more socially engaged in an online weight-loss community lost more than 8% of their body weight in six months, compared with about 5% for those who stayed isolated.
⭐ Better results with social support: A study of weight loss groups found that participants in programs that emphasized social support and accountability lost significantly more weight than those without such frameworks.
⭐ Mental and emotional reinforcement: In online communities, nearly 9 in 10 participants report that encouragement and motivation were top forms of support they received, helping them stay committed and confident on tough days.
How Support Is a Game-Changer
Here’s what happens when you accept help and stay accountable:
✨ Consistency improves — Habits win or lose the day. Support systems help you maintain healthy behaviors long enough for them to become your new default way of being.
✨ Setbacks become learning moments — When you’re accountable to someone else, missteps feel less like failures and more like opportunities to recalibrate.
✨ You build resilience together — Shared enthusiasm, shared strategies, and shared encouragement transform “I can’t” into “I can try again.”
✨ Progress becomes more sustainable — With regular group check-ins or partner support, people are more likely to stick with new behaviors — not just for weeks, but for years.
It’s Not Weakness — It’s Strategy
As women like me, 50 and better, especially know, health improvement and weight loss are marathons, not sprints. And like any major life change — whether it’s mastering a new skill, building confidence, or reshaping your health — the right support system isn’t a crutch; it’s a springboard.
So if you’re feeling discouraged, stuck, or unsure — reach out. Chat with a friend. Chat with me. Join a community. Find someone to check in with weekly, daily, or even just occasionally. (I’d be honored to be that person for you.)
Because progress isn’t meant to be achieved in isolation — it’s meant to be celebrated within community.
You don’t have to do this alone. And when you accept support and positive accountability? You give yourself the best possible chance of real and lasting success.
