Stop Letting “But” Win
Mindset isn’t just a “nice to have” pillar in your health improvement plan—it’s the operating system running everything. Your habits, your consistency, your follow-through … they all start with the thoughts you practice most often, whether you’re aware of it or not.
If you’ve ever felt stuck between wanting to take better care of yourself and actually doing it, you’re not lacking discipline—you’re likely running an outdated mental script.
I invite you to examine it …
The Power of Flipping the Script
Most of us go thru life with automatic thoughts that often sound like this:
“I want to exercise, but I’m too tired.”
“I want to eat better, but it’s been a stressful day.”
“I want to lose weight, but I don’t have the time/energy/discipline.”
At first glance, these seem harmless. Honest, even. But there’s something subtle happening in the sentence structure:
Everything after the word “but” becomes your decision.
Your brain hears the second half as the truth—and the first half as optional.
So when you say:
“I want to exercise, but it’s raining.”
What your brain locks onto is:
“It’s raining → we’re not exercising.”
Try This Instead
Flip the sentence:
“It’s raining, but I want to exercise.”
Now the priority shifts. The desire becomes the anchor—not the obstacle.
This small linguistic change does something powerful:
It reinforces your identity (“I’m someone who wants to move my body”)
It creates cognitive dissonance if you don’t follow through
It opens the door to problem-solving instead of being stuck
Suddenly, your brain starts asking:
“Okay… so what can I do?”
“What would a 10-minute version look like?”
“Is there an indoor option?”
Same situation. Completely different outcome.
Overcoming Your “Buts” (In More Ways Than One)
Let’s talk about your “buts.”
Yes—the mental ones… and maybe the physical ones too.
Because in the world of health and lasting weight loss, your “but” is often where you get stuck:
“I know what to do, but…”
“I started strong, but…”
“I was doing great, but…”
That word becomes the escape hatch—the permission slip to stay the same.
And if we’re being honest, those “buts” are often well-practiced. Comfortable. Automatic.
Here’s the Shift
What if your goal isn’t to eliminate obstacles—but to outgrow your attachment to them?
Instead of:
“I can’t stay consistent because life is busy”
Try:
“Life is busy, and I’m learning how to stay consistent anyway”
Instead of:
“I’m too out of shape to start”
Try:
“I’m out of shape, and that’s exactly why I’m starting”
This is what it means to overcome your “buts.”
Not by ignoring reality—but by refusing to let it be the final word.
Your Mindset Shapes Your Identity
Every time you flip the script, you cast a vote for the kind of person you’re becoming.
Someone who follows through even when conditions aren’t perfect
Someone who adapts instead of abandons
Someone who honors their health—even in small ways
And this matters, especially for midlife women navigating changing energy, hormones, and responsibilities.
Because at this stage, it’s not about extreme overhauls—it’s about sustainable alignment.
Small Shifts, Real Results
You don’t need more willpower.
You need:
Awareness of your default thoughts
A willingness to gently challenge them
And a simple tool to redirect them
Mindset attention turns …
“I blew it today” → “Today didn’t go as planned, and I can reset now”
“I don’t have time” → “I have 10 minutes, and that’s enough to matter”
A Simple Practice to Start Today
For the next few days, notice your “but” statements.
Don’t judge them—just catch them.
Then:
Say the sentence out loud (or in your head)
Flip it
Let your brain find a solution
Example:
“I’m exhausted, but I said I’d move my body today”
“Dinner won’t be perfect, but I can still make a nourishing choice”
This is how change actually happens—not in one big moment, but in dozens of tiny decisions shaped by shifted perspectives.
Your mindset isn’t fixed. It’s adaptable and trainable.
And when you learn to flip your script and overcome your “buts,” you stop waiting for motivation and start becoming the woman who creates momentum.
