Strong Is a Gift You Give Yourself
Strong Is a Gift You Give Yourself
What if getting stronger isn't about how you look—but about giving yourself more freedom for the life you want to live?
Strength is one of the greatest gifts you can give yourself, especially as years fly by.
Not because you need to look a certain way.
Not because you need to lift the heavy weights in the gym.
And definitely not because you need to “earn” your food.
You get stronger because your future self deserves a strong, capable body.
Strength gives you options
I invite you to think about the things you want to be able to do as you move through your 50s, 60s, 70s and beyond.
Carry groceries without struggling.
Lift your suitcase into a car or overhead bin.
Get up and down from the floor.
Climb a flight of stairs without stopping.
Pick up your grandchild.
Move furniture around.
Garden.
Travel.
Hike.
Play.
Live independently.
Say yes to the things that make life fun.
These aren't vanity goals.
They're freedom goals.
And strength helps make them possible.
Strength is about so more than muscle
When we talk about strength, it's easy to think only about muscles and lifting weights.
But physical strength is connected to so much more.
Strength supports balance and stability. It helps you maintain the physical capacity to handle everyday activities. It can help you feel more confident in your body and more capable in your daily life.
And there's something else that happens when you consistently challenge your body:
You start proving to yourself that you are capable of more than you thought.
And this confidence doesn't just stay dwell in your workout space.
It can spill over into the rest of your life.
You begin thinking:
I can do hard things.
I can learn something new.
I can take care of myself.
I can get stronger.
This is powerful.
Don't wait until you “need” strength
One of the biggest mistakes we can make as we age is waiting until we notice a loss of strength, balance, endurance or mobility before deciding to do something about it.
Strength is something to build before you really need it.
(You don’t wait to learn how to swim until you find yourself near drowning; same concept. )
Think of it like a savings bank.
Every strength-training session is a small investment in your future capacity.
Every time you challenge your muscles, practice balance, work on mobility or choose to move your body, you're making a deposit into your future self.
You may not notice the payoff tomorrow.
But in your future days, you will be very grateful you made the deposits.
Strong doesn't have to mean extreme
You don't have to spend hours in a gym.
You don't have to lift enormous amounts of weight.
You don't have to punish your body.
And you don't have to be “fit” before you begin.
Strength training can be adapted to your current abilities and fitness level. You can start with body-weight exercises, resistance bands, light weights or whatever is appropriate for you.
The goal isn't to become someone else.
The goal is to become a stronger version of you.
And then, over time, to keep building on that strength.
The gift keeps giving
Here's what I love about strength:
The benefits aren't just about today.
Strength can help you build the physical reserve you want to carry into the future.
And perhaps even more importantly, it changes the way you see yourself.
Instead of looking at your body and asking:
“How can I make you smaller?”
you can begin asking:
“How can I make you more fit, enegetic and stronger?”
Instead of exercising because you think you should, you can exercise because you want to remain capable, independent and engaged in your own life.
That's a very different relationship with your body.
So here's your reminder
Strong is a gift you give yourself.
Every squat.
Every push.
Every pull.
Every walk.
Every stretch.
Every balance exercise.
Every time you choose to care for your body instead of criticize it.
You're not just exercising for the body you have today.
You're investing in the person you want to be tomorrow.
Your future self is counting on you.
Give her the gift of strength.
